Getting Samba Share to Work on MX Linux

I really like MX Linux, but with Samba Shares they shot themselves in the foot. The GUI tool is nice, but they made some bad decisions. Yes, I’ve written about Samba Shares and NAS before on this blog. If developers would just quit dicking with it, adopt a single standard, and live with that, you wouldn’t need so many blog posts. Gotta admit, the GUI tool is straight forward. You have a nice dialog for … Getting Samba Share to Work on MX LinuxRead more

Avoid MSI Graphics Like the Plague

As an IT professional I get really pissed off when it comes to North Korean knock-off quality products, and worse, North Korean knock-off quality customer service like MSI Graphics has. Updating CachyOS – and others

CachyOS uses pacman and paru under the hood so this will work for any linux distro using those. Too many Linux distros don’t include an obvious update method that updates both repo and “other” installed software in one shot. By default CachyOS does not install flatpak. They discourage it. Personally, I prefer flatpak over docker type containers … Updating CachyOS – and othersRead more

Setting CachyOS Environment Variables

One of the massive problems with software development today, especially in the CachyOS and Linux world in general is that nobody does the documentation. Hack on the fly, make grand sweeping changes, and never update the doc! Fish Almost all of the documentation you find online for fish is wrong, at least when it comes to setting environment variables. Fish, not bash, is the shell CachyOS uses. All of those pages telling you to edit … Setting CachyOS Environment VariablesRead more

Flatpaks are Magically Bloated in Size

In a discussion thread on the MX Linux forum someone made the comment “flatpaks are magically bloated in size.” Kids today! Statements like this require a lengthy response. Despite what Twitter and “news media” have conditioned you to believe, life is not a soundbite. Being a very old geek who started out on Commodore Super PET then moved to PDP-11/70 running RSTS/E . . . having written someĀ geek books that won an award or two, … Flatpaks are Magically Bloated in SizeRead more
