Ubuntu Pig!

Ubuntu Logo

The world is quickly abandoning Ubuntu. At one time it was a much loved Linux distro but now it is a pariah. Much of it started with that virus Unattended Upgrades. Then it was the bloat and slowness. After that they buried an “Upgrade to Ubuntu Pro” nag in the MsCorefonts package so it would appear on all YABU where users installed core fonts so Web pages would look correct. Pro is only “free” for a small number of computers. After that you gotta buy a license.

Now, we are well past bloat and suffering from full-on obesity!

Just look at that ISO file size!

Do Remember When?

Do you remember when the Ubuntu crowd poked fun at “Microsoft Bloatware?”

5 1/4 floppies

I remember when Linux fit on two 5.25 inch floppies and ran in 640K of RAM. I used it then. Then SuSE got a little bigger.

Then it started coming on a CD that could hold roughly 640MB even though we didn’t have 80MB of spinning disk on our systems.

I remember when Windows XP came out the Ubuntu crowd was poking fun at Microsoft Bloatware. Near fatal guffawing happened when the “dainty” <cough cough> Windows 7 was released.

Ubuntu 24.04 LTS needs to be a contestant on The Biggest Looser.

It suffers from obesity run amuck.

Roland Hughes started his IT career in the early 1980s. He quickly became a consultant and president of Logikal Solutions, a software consulting firm specializing in OpenVMS application and C++/Qt touchscreen/embedded Linux development. Early in his career he became involved in what is now called cross platform development. Given the dearth of useful books on the subject he ventured into the world of professional author in 1995 writing the first of the "Zinc It!" book series for John Gordon Burke Publisher, Inc.

A decade later he released a massive (nearly 800 pages) tome "The Minimum You Need to Know to Be an OpenVMS Application Developer" which tried to encapsulate the essential skills gained over what was nearly a 20 year career at that point. From there "The Minimum You Need to Know" book series was born.

Three years later he wrote his first novel "Infinite Exposure" which got much notice from people involved in the banking and financial security worlds. Some of the attacks predicted in that book have since come to pass. While it was not originally intended to be a trilogy, it became the first book of "The Earth That Was" trilogy:
Infinite Exposure
Lesedi - The Greatest Lie Ever Told
John Smith - Last Known Survivor of the Microsoft Wars

When he is not consulting Roland Hughes posts about technology and sometimes politics on his blog. He also has regularly scheduled Sunday posts appearing on the Interesting Authors blog.
